Horizon Power Group Supports Major Liverpool Decarbonisation Project with Water Source Heating System

Horizon Power Group is proud to be supporting a landmark decarbonisation project in Liverpool, helping transform a residential apartment development from traditional gas boilers to a cutting-edge low-carbon heating solution.

The scheme will introduce an open-loop water source heating system, utilising four submersible pumps installed within the adjacent dock to provide a highly energy-efficient and sustainable heating source for the development.

As part of the wider infrastructure upgrade, the project also includes the installation of a new high-voltage (HV) substation and upgraded low-voltage (LV) electrical distribution network to support increased electrical demand. The system will incorporate high-efficiency water source heat pumps, advanced filtration systems, upgraded controls, and a fully refurbished energy centre.

The development represents a significant step forward in sustainable urban heating and is expected to reduce operational carbon emissions by approximately 281 tCO₂ in the first year alone.

By transitioning away from traditional gas heating systems, residents will benefit from improved energy efficiency, lower emissions, and a future-ready heating infrastructure designed to support the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Speaking about the project, Jilly Addis said:

“We are incredibly proud to support a project that demonstrates how a complex engineering project and sustainable energy solutions can transform urban developments. This scheme showcases the huge potential of water source heating technology in helping reduce carbon emissions while delivering long-term benefits for residents and communities. At Horizon Power Group, we are committed to supporting businesses and developments across the UK on their energy transition journey.”

The project also highlights the untapped potential of dock water and other renewable heat sources to support large-scale low-carbon heating systems in cities across the UK.

Horizon Power Group continues to support organisations nationwide with specialist expertise in electrical infrastructure, renewable technologies, and energy transition projects.
